ed42 wrote: But how does one get the average American (or even Mormon) to understand freedom?

To which I reply: I write this with all seriousness and sincerity, It begins by getting them to read the scriptures and to keep the commandments of God. The Apostle wrote that "where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty."

The good and the God-fearing (of whatever religion) will always be led to a greater and greater degree of freedom. The wicked and proud will be led into bondage.

John Adams wrote to a friend many years after the war for independence that the real revolution occurred before the war, that the real revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people. America became a free nation because they were prepared spiritually. - Steven Montgomery

Jeremy,

A great top ten list. Aside from the Book of Mormon, which President Benson said was the "greatest handbook for freedom" in the fight against evil and the best book for understanding the influence of secret combinations, here is my top three (3) for understanding our "awful situation."

1. Proofs of a Conspiracy, by John Robison
2. Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism, by Abbe Barruel
3. Fire In The Minds Of Men: Origins of the Revolutionary Faith, by James H. Billington.

Sometime in the near future, I'm writing an article which will take a look at these three books, and why they are important. - Steven Montgomery

Very in-depth list. I challenge anyone to give their top 10 books to understand our liberty and our "awful situation". It's tough but here's my current list (I could have included a lot of other books).

Book of Mormon
God, Family, Country - Ezra Taft Benson
Hidden Things of Darkness - Christopher Bentley
The Law - Bastiat
Economics in One Lesson - Henry Hazlet
The Manefesto - Ron Paul
The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History - Thomas Woods
The Real Lincoln - Thomas Dilorenzo
Ethics of Liberty - Murray Rothbard
The Federalist Papers - Hamilton, Madison, Jay
